What IS Medical Improv?

What IS Medical Improv?

Don't you wish you were as mentally quick as you used to be? Or that you could come up with a way to explain a device to a patient or home good to a customer and overcome objections with information and support?

Then YOU are a candidate for one of my "Improv" courses. Specifically, I teach multiple classes based on "short form" improv, an evidence based way to improve communication skills among the "Players".

Improvisation, or "Improv" was not created for "Whose Line is it Anyway" type of shows. It was created by Viola Spolin (Spoo-lin) at Hull House in Chicago. Hull House is known as one of, if not the first social work program in the US. Principles such as accepting and using what you are told to help a partner (Yes, and...) and "Don't deny" (stop listening) as a teaching tool for children and immigrants who needed to improve their confidence and communication skills.

My training of hundreds of "Mental Health Peer Support Specialists" gave them some of the tools to create a "Yes, and..." environment in their work with other peers in the mental health system. I want to do the same thing for you.

This Blog Post gives you an article on Medical Improv published by author Sarah Mahoney. She is a freelance journalist who writes on health and fitness.

Northwestern University's Katie Watson, in cooperation with The Second City Training Center, developed a ten-hour course using improv techniques, slightly modified for the health care environment, that I am licensed to provide to anyone in the health care community.
